The Alice Springs Town Council says the installation of security cameras in the town centre appears to have reduced crime.

The 14-camera network covering Todd Street and the Todd Mall went live a month ago.

The cameras are monitored three nights a week by a contractor and the police.

The council will survey businesses in the area in two months to see if they have noticed a decrease in crime.

The council's technical services director, Greg Buxton, says the first month's results are promising.

"So far so good. We in fact last weekend had no reported incidents in the mall for the nights we're monitoring, so the feeling is that the installation has had a remarkable effect on the antisocial behaviour down Todd Mall," he said.
