LYDIARD St will receive saturation closed circuit television coverage, with the exact locations of the soon-to-be installed cameras revealed.

A planning permit application lodged with Ballarat City Council shows up to a dozen cameras would be spread along the street, home to many of Ballarat's late night entertainment venues.

Some of the cameras would be mounted on the walls of businesses along the strip, while others would be tucked away under verandahs to comply with heritage requirements.

The locations include Lydiard House, the George Hotel, WM Flynn, the Regent Bar, JD's Sports Bar, Wakefield Real Estate, The Gravy Spot, Ballarat Fine Art Gallery and Old Colonists' Club.

The $350,000 installation will also include fibre optic cable, which will be laid along Lydiard St, left into Sturt St and right into Albert St.

Council allocated $200,000 towards the cameras in last year's budget, while Ballarat was also successful in attracting a $150,000 Federal Government grant towards the project.

Council's city wellbeing director Carolyn Barrie said she hoped the planning permit would be complete by the end of the month.

"It has been advertised, so providing it goes through okay and Heritage Victoria gives approval, we anticipate the planning permit process will be completed before the end of July."

She said installation works could then begin.
