An extra 200 closed circuit cameras have been installed at international airports in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

The measure is a part of the Wheeler Review into airport security, which was launched three years ago after a number of serious breaches.

A further 18 customs officers will also be employed to improve surveillance of what people are bringing into the country

Home Affairs Minister Bob Debus says it's an important step to ensure the safety of our key airports.

"They ensure that there is surveillance all over our airports all of the time in the baggage areas, in the departure lounges, in the areas where passengers are inspected."
